THE RANT: Dear Reading Public,

Dear Reading Public,

Last semester, I wrote to you about how frustrated I was that nothing ever seemed to be happening in Vermillion. I urged you to make some news. “Go out and do something exciting,” I wrote. Knowing what some people consider exciting, however, I added a note of caution: “Don’t … write a bomb threat on a bathroom stall or anything like that though. I said ‘exciting,” not ‘stupid.'”

This brings me to the events of Feb. 7. As of writing, the University of South Dakota administration still hasn’t made it clear to students just what occurred at Coyote Village that night. What is clear, however, is that somebody just made the news by doing something both exciting and exceedingly stupid.

Well, folks, you got it half-right. And half-right is perhaps the best I can ask for. It was probably overly-optimistic of me to hope that news could be made any other way than by being a fool.

Yours,

Tom Emanuel, senior
