Vandals pursued

The Vermillion Police Department is still investigating a series of vandalism that occurred in the early hours of Sept. 29.

According to Detective Robin Hower, the vandal or vandals slashed tires, bashed windshields and caused other minor damage to approximately 23 vehicles. The suspect or suspects also entered multiple vehicles with the intent to steal any items of value. The majority of the damaged vehicles were located in areas between Plum and Pine streets as well as Clark and Cherry streets. Several of the impaired vehicles are owned by residents currently enrolled at the University of South Dakota.

In addition to the vehicular vandalism, Hower said the suspect or suspects inflicted harm upon a  door to a residence in the area. Hower said it appears the suspect or suspects used a knife to puncture the tires and abuse the door. The crime is thought to be a random act of vandalism and unrelated to any recent acts of crime by Vermillion police.

As of print time, Vermillion police have no suspects for the incident. Students with information pertaining to the incident are encouraged to contact Detective Hower at 677-7070 or email him at
