Northern Iowa edges the Coyotes 24-21

The University of South Dakota Coyotes fought for all 60 minutes on Saturday afternoon but was unable pull off the win; losing to the University of Northern Iowa 24-21 at the DakotaDome.

The Coyotes had all the momentum they needed after sophomore Josh Vander Maten connected with Will Powell on a 46-yard touchdown, giving USD a 13-7 lead with just 55 seconds remaining in the second quarter.

However, the UNI offense put together a quick scoring drive and gutted the Coyote defense for a 20-yard touchdown right before the half.

After a handful of unsuccessful field goal attempts by junior kicker Kevin Robb during the third quarter, the USD squad and its fans were never able to recover.

However, USD managed to make things interesting for the Panthers, scoring on a one-yard touchdown run by Vander Maten with 40 seconds remaining. The ensuing onside kick attempt was unsuccessful and UNI was able to run out the clock.

The Coyotes had to fight from behind for much of the game while missing their senior running back Marcus Sims, who was still bothered by an ankle injury. Vander Maten picked up the slack, accumulating for 340 yards of total offense, including 135 yards on the ground.

Coach Joe Glenn and the Coyotes (1-9) will have the week to prepare for their season finale with South Dakota State University (7-2) on Nov. 17 in Brookings.
