COLUMN: Johnson retires as an unbeaten politician

Tuesday, March 26, marked an end of an era in South Dakota politics.

U.S. Sen. Tim Johnson’s retirement announcement on the campus of the University of South Dakota was symbolic of a journey that made a full circle; announcing the end at the location where his amazing career started.

After graduating from USD, its graduate school and the USD School of Law,  Sen. Johnson went on to be elected to two terms in the S.D. House of Representatives, two terms in the S.D. State Senate, five terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and three terms in the U.S. Senate, consecutively.

Standing out foremost during this run of public service is that Johnson is retiring while still maintaining an undefeated record.

Johnson’s indomitable dedication for serving South Dakota is as profound as his success in elections..  From his part in saving Ellsworth Air Force Base from closure and the Lewis and Clark Water Project, to support for agriculture and his position as chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, Sen. Johnson’s legacy is one of profound representation and care for South Dakota.

In the current state of hyperpartisan politics, it is hard for many to understand why working in politics would be even remotely enjoyable.  Fortunately, to the benefit of South Dakota, Sen. Johnson has shied away from the temptations of partisan politics.

When being questioned following his retirement announcement, Johnson reiterated the importance of moderation when representing South Dakota.  After all, it is unique to have a Democratic public servant, such as Sen. Johnson, to have never lost an election in such a conservative state.

From his humble beginnings in small town South Dakota, it is clear Sen. Johnson understood the requirements and correct way to serve the public.

Sen. Johnson understood that finding the middle, even when it may not be politically acceptable to the paradigms of his own party, was important in order to properly serve South Dakota.

In the end, it is evident that South Dakota residents have been truly undefeated in their choice to elect Sen.Johnson.
