Commentary: USD’s spring fashion forecast

We did it. We got through winter.

The dreary months are finally over and we are now in winter/spring limbo. With spring just around the corner (and summer close behind) the University of South Dakota student body can’t help get excited for the fashion  warm weather calls for. But what are some of the trends for spring 2013?

“Mint Green and coral are in,” said first-year student, Lucy Benitez.

Although the ever-changing weather in Vermillion has made for some crazy days, Benitez can’t help but contain her joy for the nice weather that is on its way.

Benitez is right. Colors like coral and mint green, as well as bright pastels are making their way into stores as we get ready for the spring season. Finally, colors that brighten everyone’s mood are in, and many students are jumping on board with this trend.

Students like first-year student Amy Pritchard can’t help but get excited for the warm days ahead.

“I am excited to wear flip flops, shorts, and tank tops again,” Pritchard said.

She believes with spring will come pastel blues and oranges, and of course, hues of pink: a trend that comes every spring.

But bright colors aren’t the only thing that is in the year.

According to Marie Claire magazine, styles like stripes, water colored hues, floral, and of course, lace. Students have already jumped on board with these trends. A stroll through the Muenster University Center includes seeing the array of spring colored pants and pastel tops to match.

“Floral dress, blazers, shirts and shorts all seem to be the desire,” said junior Nadia Tronick. “Different cut-outs in shirts and dresses are popular now that the weather is warmer. The cut-outs that show skin are a new and sexy trend.”

Tronick also said pastels are currently hot, and she is right. Winter called for dark colors like the deep reds, the navy blues and the solid black, but with spring the color wheel has turned, bringing in light colors to match the cool air.

No worries, USD men, because the trends are not just for women. Similar to women, bright pastel colors are in, and so are the graphic tees, casual light sweaters and the water boat shoes, to name a few.

These trends are the gateway to summer, so it is no surprise when a smile is the brightest accessory. It is safe to say with spring comes happier moods. Summer is approaching after all. So students, enjoy the rest of the school year and look good doing it.
