The Rant: Sweater weather

Dear Vermillion weather,

Over the past couple of days the weather in Vermillion has been chilly enough to constitute it as “sweater weather.” Don’t get me wrong, I am a fan of fall, it’s my favorite season. But one thing I have learned attending the University of South Dakota is always be prepared for the bipolar weather in our small town.

Last year, we had days in January that called for shorts and a long sleeve  t-shirt and the next day would call for snow pants. First-years may think I am exaggerating, but sadly I am not. I can’t tell you the reason for this strange weather.  All I can say is students shouldn’t get so excited for fall just yet, it is only September after all.

Coming from a town just north of here, where the weather was consistent and somewhat reliable in the way that the seasons changed and stayed, it is frustrating in terms of what to pack because I never know what tomorrow’s weather will bring.

If it were up to me, and I was playing God, I’d make it “sweater weather” year round, because, I mean, who doesn’t like cute sweaters and scarves? But I can’t control the weather and a year-round fall season is not going to happen. So, students, be excited for the weather and dress appropriately. Just don’t get too excited that it will stay this way.

Sincerely,

Katie McGuire
