The Rant

Dear USD first-years,

For those of you that made it through the first two weeks, on behalf of the entire student body and administration, I would like to congratulate you.

You have done something not every 18-year-old, fresh-faced “college student” can do. Survive. Whether it is the transition to self-reliance, Thirsty Thursday or classes, you have made the decision to stick around past the add/drop date.

So, I plead to you now, don’t fudge this up.

USD has a retention of 76 percent (U.S. News). While that number may seem positive to administrators, that means one in four of you will not be standing here this time next year.

There is no looking back now, unless you and your parents are happy with wasting thousands of dollars on a wasted education, you’re in this for another couple months.

If you are serious about getting an education, I promise you if you keep you’re head on your shoulders and know what is important this will be a breeze.

For those of you who don’t apply to the statement above, don’t think the next four odd months are your playground to romp around in. Earn the credits you, or your parents, are paying for. They are going to come in handy later if you decide to go back to school.

Either way, the exit on this highway has passed — the next one is miles down the road. So, buckle up and keep driving. I promise it will be rewarding.

Sincerely,

Austin Ashlock
