Sophomore sentiments: Netflix causes both excitement and distactions

One night after a long shift at work, I sat down on my futon and opened up my computer. Not wanting to go to bed, I did what most college students do and flipped through Netflix looking at possible shows to watch.

Little did I know, Netflix had updated their shows and added new seasons to all of my favorite TV shows. Obviously, I was excited and started watching right away.  I proceeded to stay up ridiculously late on a school night trying to finish an episode and ultimately was exhausted the next day. This was when I realized that I had a problem — my addiction to Netflix is making its way into the classroom.

I am sure others relate, but as soon as I am done with a season, I can’t help but find out what happens next. Maybe it’s the excitement, or maybe it is a better alternative to homework — either way, it isn’t something that should be available to me when I have responsibilities, like writing a blog on deadline.

But, no matter, I know that I have to focus on school. If any other student is having this problem, they should realize that although these shows and movies are now available to them, they can wait until they have free time, maybe a three-day weekend or they could hold off until winter break. We are students and our responsibilities consist largely of homework, no matter how unentertaining it is.

That night, I had spent a good two hours watching season six of “Gossip Girl,” the final season, before I realized that I do, in fact, work in the morning. Although I should have stopped myself, I began clicking the “next” button and continued watching. Yes, I know what you are thinking, I did suffer the next day at work, exhausted and regretting the late night marathon.

I could have definitely used a couple more hours of sleep; my zombie eyes might have scared the customers. The lesson was learned, I must save Netflix for when I actually have time, like say when I am done working for the weekend.
