Stiegelmeier says Glenn on right track

EDITOR’S NOTE: This week The Volante chose to do something different in respect to the upcoming USD football game against SDSU. We interviewed both head coaches in order to get an inside look on how their team is preparing for Saturday’s game.

Nathan Ellenbecker: What is the biggest difference in the rivalry this year compared to last year?

John Stiegelmeier: It feels closer to the rivalry and what the rivalry used to be. Last year was just the start. Like a lot of things, you have to start somewhere.

NE: What has surprised you most about USD this year?

JS: People don’t understand it takes at least 3-4 years to get a program where you want it, and they’re really in their second year. Coach Glenn and his staff and the players have done a really great job actually.

Earl, the quarterback, has made really good strides.

NE: How are the players feeling leading up to this game?

JS: Everything else gets put on a shelf. There’s the pride, the state championship to beat the other team in the state, but it’s exciting. This is college football at its best, college sports are at its best when you get a rivalry game where the focus is on “we want to beat you because we want to be the best.”

NE: What’s the most fun thing about coaching in such a big game for you?

JS: I really think there’s more pressure for a coach, to be honest. I love the “bigness” of the game.
