USD volleyball tramples the Jackrabbits 3-1 Friday

It was a big night at the DakotaDome Friday, as the University of South Dakota women’s volleyball team beat in-state rival South Dakota State University 3-1.

USD played in front of a sold out crowd and took the first set, winning 25-17.

But SDSU wasn’t going to allow it to be an easy match, bouncing back and taking set two 25-20, tying the series at one a piece. The Coyotes took set three rather easy winning 25-13.

Again, SDSU wasn’t going to let it off that easy. The set rallied back and forth, but the Coyotes came out on top winning a close one, 25-23 and winning the match 3-1.

Houk said he was glad to see the competitiveness between the teams.

“I tip my hat to them (SDSU), especially in set four, they played really well and we had to play really well to win,” Houk said.

The Coyotes made some adjustments during the match, taking two middle blockers, senior Natalie Walseth and red-shirt first-year Lindsey Brown, off the bench.

Head coach Matt Houk said he knew Friday’s matchup was going to be one for the books.

“I don’t care about anybody’s records in this match, no matter what, I think in every sport with South Dakota State, it is always going to be tight,” Houk said.

Brown said she knew she had to be ready for the match against the Jackrabbits.

“I knew I had to step up tonight. The whole team played good, and it’s always good to beat State,” Brown said.

The Coyotes had four players with double digit kills tonight.
