Covington leaves USD for ‘personnel matter,’ USD to launch search for replacement within the month

The University of South Dakota will launch a national search within the month to replace former Associate Dean of Students Phil Covington.

According to Dean of Students Kim Grieve, Covington left his position Dec. 21 because of a “personnel matter.” Grieve declined to comment further on the reasoning for Covington’s departure.

“He had three great years here, and knew a lot of students and deeply cared about them and their success,” Grieve said. “We wish Phil the very best.”

Until the formal search for a new associate dean of student life is announced and a candidate is hired, staffing fill-ins have been arranged.

Todd Tucker now serves as the interim director of housing. Hired in 2013, Tucker previously served as the assistant director of university housing. Prior to employment at USD, Tucker served as Northern State University’s director of residence life.

According to Grieve, Tucker was being trained by Covington to take over as interim housing director leading up to Covington’s departure.

Christine Feit, assistant director of student services for housing, has also taken on some of Covington’s responsibilities during the staffing transition.

Grieve said Feit and Tucker will remain at USD after a new associate dean of student life is appointed.

“I’m very confident in both of their abilities and know they are going to do a great job,” Grieve said. “We’re looking forward to the change, too, as it’s always good to have change.”
