Sonic Boom trailer and concept art
Well, this came out of left-field. Developed by Big Red Button Entertainment, Sonic Boom will be the next Sonic game coming to home consoles. I’d like to note that this game is not developed by Sonic Team and it will not be part of the main franchise.
So…wow, I am actually kind of stunned from this news.
The first thing that most Sonic fans are going to gripe about are the character designs. I’d like to point out how much I love Tails’ and Amy’s new looks. Tails looks like steampunk mechanic, which fits his personality type quite well. And this is probably the best Amy has looked ever. I like the mixture of magenta and purple hues scattered throughout her character model.
Sonic looks fine, honestly. The scarf is good contrast with all the blue Sonic is has (his arms are usually the same color as his belly). I always wish the bandages would be reduced around his shoes, since that is one of the items that everyone recognizes Sonic for having.

Knuckles, on the other hand, must have taken steroids. You can tell he’s been going to the gym, but skipping leg day in the process. It’s almost wrong how different in size he looks. I am definitely not a fan.

Now it’s time to pick apart the trailer. Sonic Boom, on first glance, looks like it’s going to be another take on Sonic Heroes. Sonic Heroes is unique in the fact that you controlled three Sonic characters as you progress through all the stages of the game. Adding Amy to the group, that makes four. Just looking at the trailer, I am not sure if we are going to get exactly what Sonic Heroes gave us, but it definitely has those undertones.
Also, having “Bangarang – Skrillex” in the trailer is jarring. The entire Sonic franchise is known for having some of the best music through the video game ages. Having music coming from another source, especially dubstep, seems wrong in every way possible.

Other than that, the gameplay looks pretty good. We finally have another game where we can play Tails and Knuckles. We also got a glimpse of Amy and her Pico Pico Hammer. Hopefully Amy is actually a fleshed out character in the story and not just being as annoying as possible to Sonic.
Overall, I’m giving this game a chance. But Knuckles, dude. Lay off the Roids.
