NDSU stomps USD 47-7

Trying to take down a three-time defending national championship team requires near-perfect play, and the University of South Dakota football team’s head coach Joe Glenn said his team understood that Saturday afternoon.

The Coyotes attempted to shake a three-game losing streak of their own and upset North Dakota State during Saturday’s game. Instead, the game turned out to be more of the David vs. Goliath matchup many outsiders expected.

The Coyotes fell 47-7.

“I thought we played well and shared punches early,” Glenn said. “But in the second half, they turned it up and we turned it over.”

The loss drops the Coyotes to 2-6, 0-4 in the Missouri Valley on the season. The Bison win improved their winning streak to 32 games.

The Coyotes only trailed by three after the first quarter and held the Bison to another field goal 48 seconds into the second quarter. The tides started turning soon after that. Backup sophomore running back Jordan Roberts fumbled on his first carry of the game.

NDSU scored in three plays to open up the scoring 13-0. Head coach Joe Glenn said Roberts fumble came because he has not gotten much playing time this year.

The Coyotes lone touchdown — the only one in three years against NDSU — came with 0:35 seconds in the half on a 10-yard Riley Donovan reception. After that, however, the momentum never shifted back to the Coyotes.

NDSU’s kicker Adam Keller made a 49-yard field goal to close out the half, and the Bison would go on to outscore the Coyotes 24-0 in the second half.

Bison senior running back John Crockett ran for 123 yards on 23 carries and scored one touchdown. He also tacked on 46 yards receiving including a 25-yard receiving touchdown to put the Bison up 37-7 with 2:20 left in the third quarter.

“Adding another element in our offense by having me catch the ball is a lot of fun,“ Crockett said. “And I have a hell of a quarterback, so that makes it easy.”

Glenn said his team was trying to get Donovan and others involved on deep throws, but the Bison defense was too strong.

“They didn’t let anything get behind them on the back end,” Glenn said. “Defensively, they’re the best. Especially in this conference.”

The team now travels to Ohio to play Youngstown State Nov. 1. The Penguins are 6-2 and notched their third MVFC win today with a 30-27 victory over South Dakota State.
