Athlete Spotlight: basketball player Adam Thoseby

Junior men’s basketball player Adam Thoseby is a native of Melbourne, Australia. Thoseby has been at the University of South Dakota for three seasons and is eligible for his second season of competition. Last year Thoseby averaged 7.7 points per game and 2.3 rebounds.

Sean Bower: How long have you lived in the United States?

Adam Thoseby: This will be my fifth year. I spent one year at prep school in Maine, one season at Utah State, and this will be my third year at USD.

S.B.: What made you transfer to USD from Utah State?

A.T.: I was recruited by Chris Kassen when he was one of the assistants here at USD but decided to go to Utah State. After I left Utah State, I thought ‘They recruited me before and liked me.’ So I wanted to come back.

S.B.: Do you ever get back to Australia when you’re not in season?

A.T.: I haven’t actually been back since I’ve been in the States. I would like to obviously, but it’s too far and too much traveling.

S.B.: What’s the biggest challenge with a new coaching staff coming in this year?

A.T.: I don’t think it’s a challenge individually but more as a team. Everyone is going through the same thing as I am, and as a team, we have to learn the new philosophy and expectations.

S.B.: Do you have any personal goals for the year?

A.T.: I’m not a personal goal kind of guy. I just want to win the Summit League, the Summit League tournament and make the NCAA tournament.

S.B.: What do you miss most about Australia?

A.T.: The weather, the beaches and my family. Also, not feeling like a foreign kid.

S.B.: What were your first thoughts when you moved to South Dakota? Had you heard of it before you came stateside?

A.T.: It’s really small and remote. I hadn’t heard of South Dakota until I was looking where to play college basketball. It was interesting coming here after living in and around major cities.

S.B.: What’s your favorite thing to do besides basketball?

A.T.: I love to watch the stock market, anything to do with financial news really. I am actually very interested in the bitcoin movement.
