South Dakota Sheep And Lamb Production Down Over The Year

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The number of sheep and lambs in South Dakota is down from a year ago.

A new report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows that the state’s sheep and lamb inventory on Jan. 1 totaled 255,000 animals, down 15,000 from the previous year.

The breeding herd was down 10,000 head to 200,000 animals.

The marketing herd also decreased 5,000, to 55,000 head.

The 2014 lamb crop totaled 215,000 head, down 15,000 over the year.

The report also shows that wool production last year hit a record low with 1.75 million pounds, down 80,000 from 2013.
