UPDATED: Construction worker falls 15 feet from DakotaDome construction site

A man sustained minor injuries after falling about 15 feet from the sports complex structure in the DakotaDome expansion construction site this morning.

Shannon Draper, chief of the Vermillion Fire Department, said first responders were called to the area around 8 a.m. in response to a report of a fallen construction worker.

“We were called this morning for an individual who had fallen. He sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital,” Draper said.

The man, who was doing ironwork at the time of the accident, was transported to Sanford Vermillion Hospital in critical, but stable condition. A helicopter was requested to the hospital due to the “mechanism of injury.”

First responders included a heavy rescue company from the VFD, an ambulance from the Clay County Emergency Medical Services and officers from the University Police Department.

The construction worker, whose name has not been released, is an employee of Danny’s Construction Company, Inc., a subcontractor of Mortenson Construction. According to a statement by Mortenson Construction, all ironwork on the project has been suspended while an investigation of the accident’s cause is conducted by the project team.
