Alumna continues her time at USD beyond graduation

When selecting a college to attend, some students can become overwhelmed with which school to choose.

For Kendra Howard, USD recruiter and academic adviser, the University of South Dakota was not only the institution she selected for higher education, but also where she chose to begin her career.

“I chose to start my career at USD because of the people on this campus,” Howard said.

While at USD, Howard majored in secondary education with a specialization in history and earth science.

Howard said she originally considered nearly 20 different schools, but USD became her ultimate choice because she was able to meet with faculty in the School of Education – which she said was a warm and welcoming experience.

While Howard enjoyed her time in the School of Education, she said her favorite part of her time as an undergrad was working as a student tour guide.

“I loved meeting with families and potential students,” Howard said. “During that time I was able to do a lot of networking.”

Howard is still able to meet and network with others, including potential new students, with whom she shares her experiences at USD. Howard said this is her favorite part of her job.

Howard said she was interested in convincing others to come to a college that she loved, which is why she chose to stay at USD after graduation.

“The experiences that Kendra had as a student and as an admissions counselor give her the background and connections to use to let other students have similar experiences,” said Sherrie Bosse, a senior lecturer in the School of Education and one of Howard’s colleagues.

Howard not only meets with students on campus, but also attends college fairs as a USD representative. As an adviser, Howard sets up schedules for current students.

While Howard enjoys her position now as a recruiter and adviser, she said that she one day would love to work as a director in athletic advising.

Howard has also received praise from her colleagues on campus regarding her work at USD.

Patsy Sullivan, office supervisor in the Admissions Office, is one of these people.

“Kendra is like what I would say the epitome of USD,” Sullivan said. “She’s knowledgeable, welcoming, friendly, approachable. I think USD is lucky to have her on our campus.”

Howard had equally kind things to say about her colleagues on campus.

“Frankly, the knowledge and support from others on campus has truly helped and continues to help me develop as both a professional and human being.”
