Football team catching a new wind moving forward

This year’s football team is different.

The Coyotes have now doubled their wins from a year ago, going from two last year to four this year with four games still to play.

Gone is the hopeful optimism of the early season that this year could be different. Replaced is a feeling this team has had trouble finding in the past few seasons – confidence.

It is no longer a question of who can they beat, rather who they will beat.

The NDSU game has changed this team. It was a win that was a long time coming and now that it has passed, the horizon seems brighter for the Coyotes.

The air has changed in Vermillion. Sitting in on interviews and talking with the coaches and players, it is clear that they know something is afoot.

Players are jumping around on the sideline and getting excited. The team is feeding off of one another and their play reflects that.

The win against NDSU was not a fluke. There was no crazy play or bad call that turned that game. The simple fact was that the Bison were outplayed by USD on both offense and defense. This is the team that head coach Joe Glenn has been waiting for.

Glenn always talks about “birthdays” and how he has needed them – meaning that the guys just need to mature and grow, get a little bit better.

Glenn is starting to get his birthdays.

Junior quarterback Ryan Saeger is leading the offense and junior kicker Miles Bergner is one of the best in the conference, consistent in both punting and field goals.

The defense is dominating. They are currently third in the Missouri Valley Football Conference in total defense, and the defense has mostly been the team’s calling card.

Many Coyote fans and students are unsure if any of this really means anything. They believe that the win was just an upset, simple as that, and that soon Coyotes will just go back to the bottom of the Missouri Valley.

This just does not seem like the case. Whether or not the Coyotes win another game this season, the improvements have been seen.

After a couple of rough years, this team is starting to look like a team.

The players are meshing and the coaches are starting to reap the benefits.

The team is a good mix of veterans and young players. In the next few years they will lose some players but the younger ones will only get better, and hopefully the recruits will start to catch on to what is happening.

Winning is never easy, especially after more than one rough season.

Despite the pressure to do so, it is tough to simply label the wins this season as nothing. This team has always had talent, and like Glenn always says they just needed some birthdays.

This older, stronger USD team is starting to make waves in the conference and teams are taking notice. Whether or not it is a “one time thing,” beating NDSU is not easy.

Most teams in the conference can’t do it, and no matter what happens the rest of the season, it’s hard to ignore that there’s something brewing in Vermillion.
