Sigma Tau Delta opens Little Free Lending Library

Sigma Tau Delta hosted a ribbon cutting for the opening of its Little Free Lending Library at the Vermillion Community Garden on Tuesday.

Open to anyone, the library’s only requirement is if someone takes a book they need to leave one in its place.

The event started with conversation around a table of snacks and was followed by the book box, as the organization calls it, ribbon cutting.

English Department Chair Darlene Farabee cut the ribbon and the remaining event attendees helped fill the box with books.

“When the officers of Sigma Tau Delta told me they were doing it I was very excited for them,” Farabee said. “Sigma Tau Delta has always been really involved in community efforts towards literacy.”

Holly Jorgenson, a member of the organization, gave a brief background on Sigma Tau Delta and project to the group of about 15 in attendance before Farabee cut the ribbon.

“We are excited to support a literacy-friendly neighborhood though this little free library,” Jorgenson said.

Sigma Tau Delta President Christopher Mercier said they were grateful for the community support they received.

“We had a lot of community help from the Vermillion community,” Mercier said. “We plan to have another little library in another part of town eventually. That way we can reach two neighborhoods.”
