USD volleyball wins in straight sets

After two big weekend wins to tag along with the success of the other USD athletic teams, the Coyote volleyball team is rearing toward the heart of conference play. And their weekend play led to some recognition.

The USD volleyball team got their third straight win at the Coyote Den on Saturday when they defeated IPFW in straight sets (25-12, 25-20, 25-16). On Friday night, the Coyotes defeated IUPUI 3-1 (25-21, 21-25, 25-22, 25-16).

Freshman Haley Dotseth led scoring for the Coyotes with 10 kills and three service aces on Saturday.

Meanwhile, senior middle blocker Kelsey Biltoft recorded 17 total blocks on the weekend, and that led to her first Summit League Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week honors.

“Kelsey has worked really hard to improve her block,” USD head coach Leanne Williamson said in a press release. “She is that first part of our defense, and she did a tremendous job of being a presence at the net.  She is driven to make an impact, and she did just that this week.

On top of Dotseth and Biltoft’s big play, sophomore setter Brittany Jessen recorded one of the top setter performances in school history Friday. Jessen recorded 58 assists against IUPUI and 124 over the course of the week. This earned her Summit League Offensive Player of the Week for a Coyote sweep.

The weekend success brings the team to 9-12 overall on the season and 3-5 in conference play.

The Coyotes will head to Tulsa, Okla. on Friday to take on Oral Roberts. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
