Coach Joe Glenn announces retirement

The MUC Ballroom was packed with students, athletes, colleagues and well-wishers during a press conference Monday announcing the retirement of USD’s head football coach Joe Glenn.

After “four great years” with Glenn, Athletic Director David Herbster said during the press conference he is grateful to Glenn for his work during his four year tenure at USD.

“I can’t thank Joe enough for everything he’s done for this department, this program and this university,” Herbster said. “Words don’t express how thankful I am.”

As Glenn walked into the room, he received a standing ovation from the crowd, after which he began the press conference with a light-hearted joke about how the event wasn’t his funeral.

“I’m overwhelmed. I think you can see that,” Glenn said.

Glenn then thanked his wife, Michele, and read of a long list of people to whom he felt indebted to for his successes, including teachers, sporting colleagues and USD president James Abbott. Glenn said that during his decades of university football coaching, the best university president he ever worked under was Abbott.

He said his desire to spend time with family was a significant factor in the decision to retire, but also that “this game is for a younger guy.”

“You just feel it. You know it,” Glenn said about his retirement.

Despite his departure as head football coach of his alma mater, Glenn said he and his wife plan to attend every game in the DakotaDome.

“I want everybody to enjoy the University of South Dakota and each other,” Glenn said.

‘We’re close’

With five wins this season, Glenn said the Coyote football team is closer than they’ve ever been to reaching the playoffs.

“I have every confidence we’ll just keep getting better and better,” he said. “We’re close. … I know this team’s on the right path.”

Coaching at his alma mater was also a big deal for Glenn, as he said that he had tried to get a position coaching for USD earlier in his career but that back then “the timing wasn’t right.”

USD’s football team, along with many others, had only learned of Glenn’s planned departure the Sunday afternoon, Glenn said.

Herbster said “the clock’s ticking” for USD to acquire a new head coach, and the process has started immediately.

“We’ll get her done. … We’ve charted out the qualities we’re looking for (in a new coach),” Herbster said. “We’ll find the right person. We’ve got big shoes to fill.”

During the press conference, Glenn at hinted his support for USD offensive coordinator Wesley Beschorner to take over his reign. Wrapping up his event, Glenn led the crowd in USD’s fight song.

The final question opportunity of the press conference was given to USD alumna Nancy Hoy-McCahren, who instead of asking Glenn a question, addressed the crowd before speaking to Glenn.

“There will never be another Joe Glenn,” she said. “I want to thank you. … We have been so fortunate to have you.”
