Coyote soccer draws and loses on California trip

After opening the season with a win and a loss at home, the Coyotes hit the road this past weekend to take on two California schools.

The first stop was in Riverside last Friday, as they took on University of California, Riverside.

USD struck first in the 19th minute when sophomore forward Sammie Villwock netted her first goal of the season. The Coyotes were able to hold the lead until the 77th minute when UC Riverside equalized.

In the following two overtime periods, South Dakota only managed one shot to UC Riverside’s four, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.

On Sunday, South Dakota took the short trip to Northridge to face California State University, Northridge. In the first half neither team was able to find an edge, going into halftime tied at zero.

The second half, however, came up all CSUN. The Matadors struck first in the 52nd minute, then quickly again in the 53rd. After conceding two quickly, the floodgates opened on the Coyotes. CSUN scored two more, one in the 61st minute and one in the 81st. The two matches put the Coyotes at 1-2-1 on the year.

While USD’s California trip is over, they aren’t done on the road just yet. Their next match is on Friday in Des Moines, Iowa, where they will take on Drake. They will stay on the road to take on Northern Iowa, Creighton and Iowa State in the next two weeks, before returning home on Friday, Sept. 16, to take on Eastern Washington.
