After not only losing their first Summit League match of the year in straight sets to Denver, the Coyote women rebounded, defeating Oral Roberts in straight sets, 3-0, on the road to regain winning form.
The back and forth first set saw the Coyotes push away to win 25-17. In the second, the Coyotes got out early and went on to win 25-17. The third set was another back and forth affair that the Coyotes were behind for much of. They managed a surge late to win the set 25-21 and sweep the Golden Eagles.
This match was the second of the two game home and home series the Coyotes had against Oral Roberts. USD took the first match at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center in straight sets as well winning 3-0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-16), putting the Coyotes at six sets to zero over the Golden Eagles for the year.
Redshirt sophomore Rachel Schmidt led the Coyotes in kills with 16, senior Audrey Reeg also added six kills and 11 digs. Junior Brittany Jessen totaled 26 assists for USD. She leads the Summit League in assists per set. Jessen also had nine digs.
After a three match road trip, the Coyotes return to the SCSC to take on the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Friday night at 7 p.m. USD is coming off a recent 3-1 win (25-16, 19-25, 25-16, 25-15) over the Mavericks that was the first of their recent three-game road trip.
The Coyotes will remain home and play again Saturday, when they take on the Western Illinois Leathernecks following the football game at 6 p.m. USD opened Summit League play with a trip to Western Illinois earlier this year. The Coyotes came away with a 3-0 (29-27, 25-13, 25-16) victory over the Leathernecks in their first meeting.
With the win over Oral Roberts, the Coyotes improved to 19-4 on the season and 8-1 in conference play, already an improvement over last year’s 15-16 record. The victory over the Golden Eagle ties their Summit League win mark from last season, when they finished 8-8.
