Letter to the editor: USD is safe, inclusive place for all

The 2016 President Election has brought many emotions forward both across the nation and here at USD. As a campus dedicated to inclusive excellence, we strive to be inclusive in all our practices and encourage our students to be inclusive as well. Regardless of race, nationality, creed, sexual orientation or political ideology, we should always feel safe and included here.

Additionally, we know that some of our students may be hurting from other events besides the election, such as the continuing conflict on the Standing Rock Reservation involving the Dakota Access Pipeline. The attention the DAPL conflict has garnered has brought several issues forward into the national spotlight that affect all of us, most importantly the safety of our drinking water. We hope students will continue to feel safe discussing these and other important topics here at USD.

We want to remind all students to know that no one will ever be ignored no matter what the issue. Whatever your concern, there is always an outlet for you to express yourself. The purpose of the Center for Diversity & Community is to provide a safe space for all students to gather and be accepted. For students who may feel unsafe or harassed, the Students Rights and Responsibilities Office is available to address your concerns. Your student government representatives are always willing to listen to your campus concerns and work with administrators to address them. Your voice will always be heard here. Furthermore, USD will continue to embrace inclusivity and we hope that all students will work with us in our endeavors to make USD more inclusive.
