People of the Pack: Tommy Hansen and Justin Jones

Tommy Hansen is a sophomore business administration major with a minor in marketing from Omaha, Nebraska. Justin Jones is a sophomore Health Services Administration major with a minor in Anthropology from Windom, Minnesota. They’re roommates who met last year when they were on the same floor in North Complex.

Morgan Matzen: What do you hope to do with your major?

Tommy Hansen: My goal is to own my own business in the future.

Justin Jones: My goal is to own a hospital.

MM: Why did you choose each other as roommates?

TH: I can deal with his (stuff), and he can deal with mine. We’ll be up until four in the
morning.

JJ: We’re just social people, we like to talk and have a good time.

MM: Do you have siblings?

JJ: My older sister Carrie is 24 and my brother Austin is 17. My older brother, Derek, 29, is not the most hardworking person, but he’s super smart. He went to SDSU but ended up dropping out because he’s not that kind of person, but he worked hard and now he’s got a really well-paying job at TORO. He’s really hardworking, but he doesn’t like to put forth the effort if he doesn’t see fit. My older sister, she went to school and she is human resources at a nursing home as well, and she is kind of the one that talked me into being a healthcare administrator. She said that there’s not a lot of good ones, so if I can be good at it, then that would be good. My little brother is my closest brother, so we grew up together. It’s a normal relationship there, I guess.

TH: I have a younger brother named Johnny and he is 18. Being a year and a half apart, you do a lot of stuff with him and have the same interests. We grew up playing the same sports together, mainly basketball and football. Just being around the same age, you are always doing the same stuff together and you grow up doing the same things. I shared the same bedroom with him for a while, so I really got to know him. I think he’s a really caring guy, he’s a hard worker and he wants to go into the Air Force. He definitely puts his time and effort into things he find worth his interest. (Living with Johnny), sometimes you gotta deal with things you don’t want to, but in the long run it pays off. It’s just sibling things, like we get in fights and things like that. In the long run, I love him and I’ve just got to deal with it.

MM: What made you want to work in a hospital?

JJ: It wasn’t just Carrie, it was my mom too. She runs the office part of Good Samaritan Home Health. I’ve always known I’ve wanted to help people, but I’m not smart enough to be a doctor. Business makes a lot more sense to me. If I can help run the hospital and help other people out that way, in my mind I would get the same benefit out of it helping people.

MM: What’s something not many people know about you?

TH: Where do I start? I’m a pretty open person. I’m a Taylor Swift fan, I guess. A lot of people get a lot of interest out of that fact. “Fearless” is my favorite album, and I knew all of “Our Song” in sixth grade thanks to my brother.

JJ: People who know me well know that I enjoy slacklining. That’s something that I really enjoy doing that not a lot of people even know what it is. I’m trying to make a Slackline USD club. I have a page on Facebook.

TH: I’ve brought him down to Verm beach and he did it over the water. It was pretty cool. In the spring, we’ll be out by North Complex.
