Women’s golf places fifth, men finish 12th

Senior golfer Brenna Lervick was the runner-up for the second time in a row when she came in second at the Kansas City Shootout.

Held on Sunday and Monday at the Shoal Creek Golf Club, the Coyote women came in fifth out of ten teams at the tournament, which was the last of their regular season. The Coyote men also played their last tournament of the regular season on Monday and Tuesday, placing 12th out of 18 at the University of Missouri’s Club at Old Hawthorne.

Lervick said that in spite finishing second, she wishes she had played better.

“Overall, I wish I would have played a little bit better in my last kind of non-conference tournament,” Lervick said. “But conditions were really really tough out there. The wind was blowing pretty quickly.”

The Coyote men did much better the second day of the tournament.

“This week was okay, we played much better (Tuesday) as a team,” said John Vining, assistant coach of the golf team. “(Monday) was tough, I mean this is a tough golf course and a great field of 18 teams. The wind was blowing pretty much all day (Monday).”

Sophomore Tommy Vining finished in the top 10 for the third time this season, finishing eighth. Vining shot an even par overall, shooting 70 the first round, 75 the second round and 71 the third.

“It was pretty good to seem him compete right up there with the top players in the SEC, players from the University of Missouri,” Vining said. “It was a good week for him.”

With the regular season behind them, the women and men are gearing up for the Summit League Championships, which are two weeks away in Nebraska City, NE.

“I think our main focus is to make sure we’re ready to battle,” Lervick said. “And we play against Denver, and they’re a very talented team. As well as South Dakota State, they’re very good teams. But we’ve proven that we can play good anywhere and everywhere. All in all, we’re just going to keep fighting and working on all parts of our game.”

Lervick is optimistic about their chances in the Summit League Championships.

“I think everybody is really pretty excited going into this year,” Lervick said. “I think we have the best team we’ve had in all the years I’ve played and going forward, it will be really fun to finally compete. I feel like we have a chance to get first at Conference.”
