USD names Todd Lee new men’s head basketball coach

Todd Lee, a USD alumnus, was announced as the new men’s head basketball coach Wednesday, according to GoYotes.

Lee graduated from USD in 1986 with a business administration degree, and received his master’s in education at Azusa Pacific in 2003.

David Herbster, USD’s athletic director, said in the GoYotes press release that Lee “checks all the boxes and has been a winner everywhere he has been.”

Lee was previously associate head coach at Grand Canyon University, garnering a 103-58 record. According to GoYotes, GCU’s 81 wins after its transition to Division I are the most in their program’s history. The Lopes won 22 games this past season and advanced to the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The team also earned the top three spot of the WAC in the five seasons with Lee.

Lee also was head coach at Kentucky Wesleyan, compiling a 154-81 record and also competing in five National Collegiate Athletic Association tournaments. He led the team to 14-0 starts in consecutive seasons, a no. 1 seed rank and a run to the Sweet 16 in 2012. Lee finished his final seasons with a 22-win average and .736 percentage.

Lee coached at UC-Irvine, CSU Bakersfield, San Diego and Southwest Junior College. Lee won the NCAA Division II national Championship at Bakersfield and won two Big West Conference Championships with UC Irvine.

A press conference will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in the DakotaDome Club.
