Local church vandalized, investigation ongoing

The Apostolic Faith Church of Vermillion was vandalized this weekend, and the damage was discovered Sunday morning.

In an article from The Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan, Pastor Greg Robinson said he and his son came to the church that morning to prepare for services and noticed the front entry light was on and a side window was open.

Robinson said the church is usually unlocked.

“We don’t lock the door, so the community can use it for prayer or to use the bathroom,” he told the Press & Dakotan.

Inside, he noticed a dry-erase board had been set in front of the podium. On the board were the words “Abraham’s Two Sons.”

What was also discovered under the words was a stick man and Robinson said that this was similar to the hangman game. However, instead of the correct answer, the answer was, “Revelation 17:18.”

Robinson told the Press & Dakotan this is a passage about the apocalypse.

Robinson also noticed that the door to the attic was broken and the furnace door had been pulled off along with the wires which then appeared to be reassembled.

As a black man, Robinson said that he suspects that race may have had something to do with the incident.

Law enforcement will be present at the church’s next service.

The Vermillion Police Department and the Apostolic Faith Church could not be reached for comment in time for publication. The incident is under investigation.
