Traveling and joining organizations prepares students for life after college

Part of the college experience is stepping out of your comfort zone and opening up yourself to new opportunities. The University of South Dakota has many ways students can get involved, including student organizations and academic travel trips.

USD has study abroad programs, the Alternative Week of Off-campus Learning organization and the National Student Exchange. By participating in organizations such as these, students can push themselves to be the best they can be in order to prepare for the real world.

Traveling is an important part of growing up because students have the opportunity to learn about places and people different from their own lives. The NSE is a great start for those who want to travel, but may not feel ready to go to a different country. For some students, this is still a great opportunity to test their independence.

With more than 150 organizations, students can find a variety of activities to do at USD. While some organizations have specific requirements, many are open to the entire student body. By joining a group, a student can have the chance to meet others who have similar interests, and it may open up opportunities for future professional endeavors.

Students also have the chance for opportunities within their own department. Many departments at USD offer the chance for scholarships and work-study jobs, and are constantly encouraging all of their students to pursue summer internships and career options. If students are interested in such opportunities, they should look on their department’s web page on the myUSD Portal or speak with a professor within their department.

By applying and being accepted into USD, students have already taken the first step on a new adventure, but it doesn’t stop there.

College, and all it has to offer, is meant to prepare students for the real world. By coming to college students are testing their independence and while it is a great start, there are always more opportunities for students to grow.
