Closings Start In Ex-US Senate Candidate’s Voting Law Trial

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Closing arguments have started in the election law violation trial of former South Dakota US. Senate candidate Annette Bosworth.

Bosworth’s trial resumed Wednesday afternoon after a break for the long weekend.

The Sioux Falls physician is accused of election law violations that include being out of the country when her petitions to get on the ballot say she was gathering signatures. Bosworth has admitted she was abroad at that time.

Under state law, the person circulating petitions must witness the signings from registered voters. Bosworth’s defense says she made a mistake by listening to the advice of former attorney Joel Arends, who has denied any wrongdoing.

Bosworth received 6 percent of the vote in the 2014 Republican U.S. Senate primary.
