In Reversal, SD Board Would Keep Harney Peak Name

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakota board has reversed itself and recommended that Harney Peak not be renamed even though some American Indians may find it offensive.

The Board on Geographic Names earlier recommended that Harney Peak, in the Black Hills National Forest, have its name changed to “Hinhan Kaga (Making of Owls).”

Board members say there was no public consensus on a new name. At least two members of Gov. Dennis Daugaard’s cabinet had opposed the proposed name change.

The state board’s recommendation now goes to a federal board.

Harney Peak was named for Arm Gen. William S. Harney, who in 1855 led soldiers who killed Sioux Indians in Nebraska.
