South Dakota Agencies Getting $662K For New Officers

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota agencies have been awarded more than $662,000 in Community Oriented Policing Services grants.

Acting U.S. Attorney Randolph Seiler says the Sioux Falls Police Department is receiving $375,000 to fund three officers. Eagle Butte is receiving $171,000 to fund one officer and Sisseton Wahpeton Law Enforcement is getting about $116,000 to fund one officer.

The Office of Community Oriented Policing Services — or COPS — is a federal agency responsible for advancing community policing nationwide.

The COPS Hiring Program provides grants to state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies to hire or rehire community policing officers. The program provides salaries and benefits for officer and deputy hires for three years.
