Obama Visits Watertown As 1st SD Tech Scholarships Awarded

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — President Barack Obama will speak at the commencement ceremony of a South Dakota technical school Friday just months after unveiling a proposal to make two years of community or technical college education “as free and universal as high school.”

Obama’s speech to Lake Area Technical Institute graduates come at the same time that South Dakota is granting the first round of full-ride scholarships at the state’s four technical schools.

At least 260 of the more than 900 applicants to the Build Dakota Scholarship Program have been awarded a financial aid package that includes free tuition, books and any materials required by their degree.

Obama unveiled his “America’s College Promise” program in January. Estimates show 9 million students could eventually participate and save an average of $3,800 in tuition per year.
