SGA schedules monthly public forums for students

The Student Government Association will moderate a public forum regarding the smoking ban Nov. 27 in order to address student concerns.

The forum will be similar to the previous public forum where the question of whether to bring Chick-fil-A to campus was addressed.

A forum regarding athletics is planned for January, and another revolving around the amount of quality housing available in Vermillion will be in February.

SGA members mentioned asking the city council to review housing standards, and said students are living in houses that are inhabitable because landlords will not repair or improve them because they have passed inspection.

VanMeeteran said if more housing is not available, there is a possibility the university will not survive in Vermillion and that parts of the university could be lost to other cities such as Sioux Falls.

“If we, as a student body, want to come forward and say we are not dealing with this anymore, we would put them in a position where they would have to do something about this,” VanMeeteran said. “It has to change.”
