‘I Ran from the Cops’ 5K Fun Run slated for Sept. 27

University of South Dakota students and the Vermillion community will have the chance to run from the cops with their bail bond only set at $5.

The second annual “I Ran from the Cops” 5K Fun Run will be held Sept. 27 at Prentis Park. Registration, which includes a $20 fee, is set for 8:30 a.m. with the run beginning half an hour later.

Participants will be provided with an orange T-shirt on a first-come, first-serve basis and a flag similar to that used in flag football. After giving the runners a short head start, about 20 Vermillion Police Department officers wearing blue shirts will set off to “chase” the runners.

If participants lose their flag before crossing the finish line, they must go to a jail cell set up in the park and pay a $5 donation to get out on bond. Donuts and other goodies will be provided for participants following the run.

All proceeds benefit the Vermillion Fraternal Order of Police (FOP), a nonprofit organization composed of law enforcement officials, FOP secretary and Deputy Sheriff David Kyte said. Funds raised will later be distributed to local, charitable purposes.
