Former Head Of Oglala Sioux Forms Group To Combat Racism
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — The former president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe has formed a group to confront racism in Rapid City in response to reports that some Native American children were subjected to racial slurs and sprayed with beer at a local hockey game.
Former President Bryan Brewer tells KCSR-AM his yet-to-named group met for the first time Wednesday.
The group formed after reports that patrons at a Rapid City Rush hockey game harassed children form the American Horse school in Allen.
Brewer says he knows that they can’t change everyone, but that his ultimate goal is to encourage all children to get to know all races.
The group is made of tribal members, Rapid City residents and others and will meet again toward the end of the month.
