USDA: 300 Fewer Farms, Ranches In South Dakota In 2014
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The US. Department of Agriculture says there were 400 fewer small operation farms and ranches in South Dakota last year.
The Department’s annual survey shows the state had about 31,700 farms and ranches in 2014. The state saw a net loss of 300 from 2013.
While there were 100 more farms and ranches that brought in more than $100,000 in agricultural sales, there were 400 fewer farms that made less than $100,000.
The total farm and ranch count in the state is at its lowest since 2008 when there were about 31,400.
