DOJ, Rapid City Reach Agreement Over Center’s ADA Compliance
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — The Justice Department and Rapid City officials have reached an agreement over the city’s Civic Center ADA noncompliance issues.
Federal officials on Monday made public the changes that the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center must undergo. Rapid City officials were given up to 30 months to bring the facility to meet Americans with Disabilities Act standards.
The arena was built in 1977 and never adapted to the 1990 standards. An anonymous complaint was filed over two years ago against the center.
Residents are to vote next week on a new $180 million arena that would meet ADA standards. If the project is voted down, modifications to the Don Barnett Arena could cost around $73 million.
Mayor Sam Kooiker says the agreement allows the city “to move forward” on the matter.
