Legislators Agree To 6-cent Gas Tax Hike In Road Deal
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — House and Senate lawmakers have reached a deal on a proposal to hike road and bridge funding that would in part raise South Dakota’s fuel taxes by 6 cents immediately.
Negotiators from both bodies finalized the deal on Friday. It must be approved by both chambers. Negotiators outlined a proposed 6 cent immediate increase in fuel taxes, the scope of which had been the main sticking point in negotiations.
The bill raises road and bridge funding through increases in fuel taxes, fees and other assessments. Senate legislators unsuccessfully pushed their House counterparts Thursday to support larger fuel tax increases over a longer time period, and the 6-cent immediate increase is the compromise lawmakers brokered.
Legislators said they want to take action on funding for road and bridge funding this session.
