Motorists Being Asked To Drive Carefully Near Bighorn Sheep

DEADWOOD, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota officials are asking motorists in the western side of the state to drive carefully when they are near bighorn sheep.

The state’s Game, Fish and Parks Department last month released 26 bighorn sheep in the high country near Deadwood. The herd, however, has repeatedly traveled down and around roadways over the past two weeks, occasionally presenting a hazard to travelers.

Mike Kintigh is regional supervisor at the department’s Rapid City office. He says it’s not unusual for bighorn sheep to travel toward roads in search of salt.

The department says bighorn sheep are expected to travel and cross Highway 385, from the top of Strawberry Hill down through Deadwood, and Highway 14A from Radio Tower Road through Deadwood and Lead.
