SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A young giraffe from a South Dakota zoo is about to begin an overseas trip to a new home.
The almost 2-year-old giraffe from the Great Plains Zoo and Delbridge Museum of Natural History in Sioux Falls is being sent to Zoorasia in Yokohama, Japan.

Elizabeth Whealey is the zoo’s president and chief executive officer. Whealey says the male giraffe would have never become a father in a North American zoo, but it will provide a new genetic strain to Asian facilities.
The 11-foot-6 giraffe named JPed was born at the South Dakota zoo in 2013. It will begin its journey to Japan Tuesday when a towering truck takes it on a ride to Boerne, Texas, where it will be quarantined. A plane will later take the giraffe to Yokohama.
