Planned Speaker To Wait Another Year Due To Obama’s Visit
WATERTOWN, S.D. (AP) — The speaker who was originally chosen to deliver the commencement address at Lake Area Technical Institute before President Barack Obama announced he will be doing so himself will get a chance to talk to the school’s graduates next year.
The Watertown school had asked instructor Dolores Stemwedel to be the speaker during the May 8 ceremony. But Obama earlier this month announced that he’ll be completing his tour of all 50 states when he addresses Lake Area’s graduates.
Stemwedel tells the Watertown Public Opinion that she hasn’t stopped practicing her 12-minute speech because if Obama can’t make it, she’ll have to step in and deliver it. But if Obama shows up as expected, she’ll get to do it in 2016.
Stemwedel began her teaching career at Lake Area in 1966.
