SD Board Taking Input On Proposed Harney Peak Name Change
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A state board is meeting to take public input on a proposed name change for Harney Peak in Pennington County.
The South Dakota Board on Geographic Names is scheduled to hold meetings Wednesday in Custer and Rapid City. The board also accepts written comments.
One new suggested name for the geographic feature is Black Elk Peak, but many others also have been proposed. The peak is in the Black Hills National Forest, and it’s been described as the highest summit in the U.S. east of the Rocky Mountains.
It was named for Army Gen. William S. Harney, who in 1855 led soldiers who killed Sioux Indians in Nebraska. The board will take public input and could issue a recommendation to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.
