State To Mull Dropping 80 Mph Speed Limit West Of Rapid City
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Travelers on a roughly 55-mile stretch of I-90 west of Rapid City to the Wyoming border may not be able to drive the new 80 mph speed limit for much longer.
The state Transportation Commission will take public comment during a hearing at the end of May on a proposal to drop the speed limit on that portion to 75 mph.
Transportation Department engineer Mike Carlson says the hilly stretch of interstate is heavily traveled and has curves that aren’t conducive to the new limit.
The new upper speed on I-90 and I-29 came from a transportation funding package signed last month.
The commission also plans to hear from the public on a proposal to temporarily drop speed limits in the area even further for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
