6 South Dakota National Guard Soldiers Going To Afghanistan

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Six soldiers with the South Dakota Army National Guard in Rapid City are being deployed to Afghanistan for a year

A deployment ceremony will be held Wednesday at the Army Aviation Support Facility next to Rapid City Regional Airport.

The six are members of Detachment 48, which is a fixed-wing aviation unit comprised of pilots and operations specialists who fly the C-12 King Air. Its primary mission will be providing aerial surveillance in support of ground commanders in the field.

The ceremony is open to the public. Planned speakers include Gov. Dennis Daugaard and Maj. Gen. Tim Reisch, the adjutant general of the Guard.

After training in Fort Bliss, Texas, for several weeks, it will be the third mobilization for Detachment 48, which deployed to Afghanistan in 2008 and 2011-2012.
