Bosworth Testifies During Her Election Law Violation Trial

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Former South Dakota political candidate Annette Bosworth has defended herself during her trial for election law violations by saying she didn’t intend to mislead anyone.

Bosworth took the stand on Friday. Her defense team says she made a mistake by listening to the advice of her former attorney Joel Arends.

Bosworth admits she was out of the country during a time when her petitions to get on the ballot say she was gathering signatures. But under South Dakota law, the person circulating the petitions must witness the signings from registered voters.

Arends testified earlier in the trial, denying he gave Bosworth legal advice that led to the election law violations. Bosworth says he specifically advised her on the subject.

She has pleaded not guilty to perjury and filing false documents.
