Buffalo Chip Campground At Sturgis To Be State’s Newest City

STURGIS, S.D. (AP) — Voters in the Buffalo Chip Campground area near Sturgis have voted unanimously to make their community South Dakota’s newest city.

Thursday’s vote was 43-0 in favor of incorporation.

The city of Sturgis unsuccessfully tried several ways to block the election, including an appeal to the South Dakota Supreme Court. City officials and adjacent landowners are concerned about Buffalo Chip’s ability to annex areas around it.

Buffalo Chip owner Rod Woodruff wants to turn the campground into a city that can attract businesses friendly to the motorcycle industry. The annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally draws hundreds of thousands of people to the area. The campground hosts hordes of visitors.

Sturgis City Manager Daniel Ainslie tells the Rapid City Journal that the dispute isn’t over in the courts.
