Defense Team: Annette Bosworth Made An “honest Mistake”
PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The defense team of former South Dakota political candidate Annette Bosworth is claiming that an “honest mistake” is what landed her before a jury to face charges of election law violations.
A jury of 12 people and two alternates on Wednesday in Pierre heard the opening arguments from Bosworth’s defense attorneys and the prosecution.
Bosworth is a 43-year-old Sioux Falls physician who unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for the 2014 U.S. Senate race. She’s accused of election law violations that include allegedly being out of the country during a time when her petitions to get on the ballot say she was gathering signatures.
Bosworth says she’s the target of “political persecution.” She’s pleaded not guilty to perjury and filing false documents.
The Capital Journal reports Deputy Attorney General Robert Mayer told the jury Bosworth is charged with perjury for making a false statement about a material fact.
