Health System Says Nurse Fired After Making ‘racist’ Remarks
RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A South Dakota health care system says it has fired a nurse for making comments about Native Americans and African-Americans that it deemed “extremely derogatory” and “racist” in a video posted on social media.
Regional Health said in a news release Monday that the nurse was fired from her job at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Brent Phillips, the health system’s president and CEO, said in a statement that there’s a “zero tolerance policy” regarding such behavior.
The Rapid City Journal and KOTA-TV report the nurse used profanity toward Native Americans in the video. A Regional Health spokeswoman says the health system started getting calls about the video Sunday.
Regional Health says it’s inviting community members to meet in front of the Rapid City hospital at noon Tuesday in a display of community solidarity.
