Late Spring Storm In SD Could Endanger Young Livestock

STURGIS, S.D. (AP) — A late spring storm expected to dump over a foot snow on some parts of western South Dakota could endanger young livestock.

Dave Olilla with the Regional Extension Center of South Dakota State University in Rapid City tells KBHB-AM in Sturgis that the main concern for ranchers during a spring storm is protecting calves.

Olilla says ranchers should have shelters ready to protect their young livestock. He says that if a ranch lacks a calve shelter, ranchers should at least put up portable panels to fence a corner of their windbreak in such a way that calves can go under to seek shelter, but not cows.

Forecasters say Lead, Deadwood and Hill City could see between 12 and 24 inches of snow between 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday evening.
